Ricky Skaggs To Release New Album Mosaic On August 24

(Los Angeles, CA) July 28, 2010 – 14-time GRAMMY winner Ricky Skaggs is back with a full band sound, a style that made him one of the best-selling artists in Country history with an incredible string of 12 #1 Country hits and 12 Top 20 Country albums. His rousing and moving new album, Mosaic, will be released on August 24, 2010 through Skaggs Family Records and is a testament to his personal faith.

Skaggs worked closely with fellow GRAMMY winner Gordon Kennedy, known for his work with Eric Clapton, Garth Brooks and Bonnie Raitt, to create an album that mixes elements of Country music with Beatles-esque melodies and lyrics that speak to Skaggs’ faith, making “music that is in my head and in my heart,” says Skaggs.

Watch a snippet of Skaggs and Kennedy performing album standout “Someday Soon” on the 2010 Dove Awards telecast: http://www.shorefire.com/media/RickySkaggsDovesClip_20100615_104753.mov, from the 41st Annual GMA Dove Awards on gmc. The GMA Dove Awards are seen exclusively on gmc.

With Mosaic, Skaggs takes his music in a new direction, reincorporating electric instruments, keyboards and drums. While the songs will resonate well with AC Radio, Skaggs hasn’t abandoned his acoustic, bluegrass roots and mixes a pop/rock/ country sound with strains of acoustic guitar, mandolin and fiddle.

The title track, “Mosaic,” signals all to realize that no matter how small we feel at times, we all have a unique place in life. “Someday Soon” opens with banjo and piano over a sturdy drum beat before kicking into a catchy chorus. Ethereal keys, hand drums, a 12-member choir and an electric guitar played by Peter Frampton, kick off album standout “My Cup Runneth Over,” while “Picture” has a lush sound accented by strings and a hammered dulcimer. And with a clever twist on the title, “Return to Sender” includes an orchestra as well as background vocals by Tommy Sims.

Following an unparalleled string of success in Country music in the 1980s and early ‘90s, including 8 CMA Awards (1985 Entertainer of the Year), platinum records and a performance at the GRAMMYS, in 1997 Skaggs created the Skaggs Family Records label and for the next 13 years focused almost exclusively on bluegrass and acoustic-based music.

Now, with Mosaic, Skaggs and Kennedy have created a mélange of sounds by incorporating an eclectic array of instruments including the mandolin, banjo, acoustic guitar, violin, percussion, hammered dulcimer, string section, bagpipe, bouzouki, electric guitar, keyboard, slide guitar and more.

Doug Oldham Passes Away

This press release was taken from the ChristianExaminer.com:

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Dove Award-winning gospel singing veteran Doug Oldham passed away on July 21 at a Charlottesville, Va., hospital awaiting surgery for a back injury sustained about a week ago. He had been in declining health in recent years. He was 79 years old.

With a music career that spanned more than 50 years, Oldham may have been best known for his weekly appearances with the late Rev. Jerry Falwell on The Old Time Gospel Hour television program that began in the early ‘70s and continued much of his career.

Falwell once wrote, "He has sung for presidents and royalty. Doug Oldham is as fine a singer as there is and he is a master communicator. But the important thing to me is that he has remained true to his Lord and his calling.”

Oldham began singing in the early ‘60s at tent revival meetings where his father preached. He soon met a young songwriter named Bill Gaither and they began to travel on weekends with Gaither playing the piano and Oldham singing the songs Gaither and his wife Gloria were writing.

According to the Gospel Music Association, Oldham was the first person to ever sing and record “He Touched Me,” one of the most famous songs ever written by Gaither—a song later recorded by Elvis Presley.

In 2006, Oldham was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.

In a 2007 interview with the Liberty Journal, Bill Gaither said, “Not all awards are historic, but I think that particular one was because of the major contribution he made. It was a very deserving moment.”

Gaither called his friend a “unique communicator, with a great heart.”

“People liked him because he sang with such feeling,” Gaither said. “His spirit in spite of his bad health is amazing to me. The optimism I hear in his voice in spite of the fact I know he has endured a lot of pain with his back is amazing.”

Over the course of his five-decade career, Oldham recorded more than 65 albums and performed for former presidents Dwight Eisenhower, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, and George Bush, Sr.

Oldham was known around the world, with fans from Canada to Holland, where he was at one time No. 1 in gospel music, to all across England, where he sang for the queen.

In 2007, Liberty University named a recital hall after him and set up a scholarship fund in his honor at the Center for Worship.

Oldham and his wife of nearly 60 years Laura Lee lived in Lynchburg, Va.

Many of Oldham’s original recordings have been digitally remastered and are available on CD at http://www.dougoldham.com.

July 14, 2010 - The International Songwriting Competition (ISC) has put together the most high-profile and prestigious judging panel in its nine-year history. Known for its high caliber of judges, ISC offers songwriters and artists the unprecedented opportunity to have their music heard by some of the world's most iconic and successful recording artists, as well as many major and indie record label presidents.

Now accepting entries for the 2010 competition, ISC gives away more than $150,000 in cash and prizes (shared among the 66 winners) including an overall Grand Prize consisting of $25,000 (US) cash and $20,000 in prizes.

To enter, go to http://www.songwritingcompetition.com

Open to both amateur and professional songwriters, ISC offers 22 categories to enter, representing all genres of popular music. Past winners have included artists at all levels, from Grammy winners to hobbyist songwriters and everyone in between. To better level the playing field for unsigned artists, ISC has added this year the "Unsigned Only" category which is open to songwriters and artists not signed to a major label record deal, publishing company, or distribution deal. This category provides an excellent opportunity for unknown artists to compete against others on a similar level.

Winning ISC can be a tremendous career booster. In the past five years, three of the Grand Prize winners have been signed to major label deals (Universal and Epic). Many more winners have secured publishing deals, smaller label deals, licensing deals, and distribution deals in addition to getting more gigs, fans, and recognition.

Monte Lipman, President of Universal Records, talks about his role as an ISC judge: "We're always been impressed with the talented songwriters who participate in the ISC. This is a great A&R source to find new artists."

Brentwood, TN (Mansion Entertainment) July 13th, 2010 – The Lou Hildreth Award, a part of the annual Diamond Awards, is presented each year in recognition for leadership in the Christian Music Industry and for making significant contributions to the expansion of Southern Gospel.

The award had its beginning in 1986, when Bill Traylor was asked, on the behalf of a Nashville publication owner, to name someone that was "making a difference" on Music Row. Bill Traylor surprised Lou Hildreth by presenting her with the first Lou Hildreth Award. The following year, Lou Hildreth presented the award to Joe Moscheo, who was the current Chairman of the Board at GMA. A few years lapsed before the award was presented again, however; the award was brought back at the request of Gary Cohn, Editor of The Gospel Voice at the time. The Lou Hildreth Award was also presented for several years at the National Quartet Convention. Some of the past recipients of the award are Dottie Leonard Miller, Fay Shedd, Beckie Simmons, Clarke Beasley, Judy Nelon, Paul Boden, Ed Leonard, Ed Harper, Jim Black, Brian Hudson, and Dr. Allen Smith.

The Diamond Awards nominees and recipients are chosen by fans with the exception of the Lou Hildreth Award. Lou Hildreth herself chooses whom she believes is making significant difference in the expansion of Southern Gospel Music. "It is my heart's desire that the ‘Lou Hildreth Award’ will encourage and inspire young men and women to choose a career in Christian Music and serve the industry with passion to the glory of God." Ms. Lou Hildreth.

The 2010 SGN Scoops Diamond Awards were handed out in Branson, Missouri as part of the 2nd Annual Branson Gospel Music Convention. This year’s recipient of the Lou Hildreth Award happened to be its first presenter 24 years ago, Bill Traylor. Mr. Traylor is the Vice-President of Mansion Entertainment and a popular Southern Gospel program host.

The morning started as early as 4 am for some of the 23 singers that made up the Delta Choir. Singers came from as far as Seattle, Wa, while others came from Salt Lake City, UT, Minneapolis, MN, New Jersey, and Atlanta, GA.

"It was described to me as a kinda 'American Idol' within the ranks of the Delta employees," says Chief Engineer, Mike Pillow. He continues, "each of the participants competed for the reward of singing on the recording which will be distributed through Delta training seminars, and employee events for the rest of the year!"

The event lasted all day as each part of the song was recorded by the choir and several soloists.

Delta project manager Glen Cantrell was extremely pleased with the finished product, "The entire staff of Lamp was excellent to work with on this project. I couldn't be happier, and the project turned out to be a huge success with upper-level management. We'll definitely be using Lamp again in the future."
